About
Located in Fengjie County of Chongqing, this world-famous scenic spot consists of two core parts: Baidi City and Qutang Gorge. Built in the Western Han Dynasty, Baidi City preserves complete ancient temple complexes including White Emperor Temple, Wuhou Shrine and Mingliang Palace, bearing the well-known historical tale of Liu Bei entrusting his orphan to Zhuge Liang and countless classic poems left by Li Bai, Du Fu and other literati throughout dynasties. Adjacent to the city stands Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most magnificent gorge of the Yangtze Three Gorges, with towering sheer cliffs forming Kuimen Gate, the iconic landscape printed on the back of China’s 10-yuan note. The scenic area perfectly combines profound Three Kingdoms historical heritage, millennium poetry culture and spectacular natural river gorge scenery, serving as the gateway to the Three Gorges tourism belt.
Travel Tips
- Purchase real-name tickets in advance via official WeChat mini-programs and present valid ID documents for admission inspection; the ticket includes free rides on official inter-island ferries within the scenic zone.
- Take high-speed rail to Fengjie Station then transfer to public buses or taxis to reach the scenic spot; self-driving visitors can use the designated scenic parking lot.
- Wear non-slip flat sports shoes, as the mountain trails, stone steps and riverside plank roads stay damp and slippery all year round due to high humidity by the Yangtze River.
- Flash photography is forbidden in exhibition halls displaying cultural relics and hanging coffins to protect fragile historical artifacts.
- Do not climb ancient architectural walls, cliff stone carvings or unguarded canyon edges, and avoid feeding wild monkeys wandering along mountain paths to prevent scratches.
- Do not trust unlicensed private tour guides and illegal boat vendors outside the visitor center; all sightseeing cruise services should be purchased at official counters.
