Travel Tips

• Inter-county buses run from Shigatse Bus Station to Gyantse Town
• Wear modest and decent clothes. Sleeveless garments, shorts and revealing outfits are not allowed in Buddha halls
• Take off hats and sunglasses to show respect for local religious traditions
• Flash photography is strictly forbidden in all main halls and mural rooms
• An extra 10-yuan camera access fee is charged inside the Kumbum Stupa, and flash lights must never be used to protect fragile ancient wall paintings
• Follow the clockwise touring route inside the monastery in accordance with Tibetan Buddhist customs
• The staircases within the Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda are steep, narrow and dimly lit
• Walk slowly, grip handrails firmly and watch your step to avoid accidental falls
• Keep your voice low in the entire compound and do not disturb lamas during scripture recitation and religious rituals
• Drone flights are completely prohibited over the protected zone of the monastery to secure ancient wooden structures
• Apply high-SPF sunscreen, wear windproof scarves and polarized sunglasses for protection
