The layout features houses built on four sides surrounding a central courtyard, embodying ancient Chinese feng shui philosophy, family ethics and northern architectural aesthetics. Most well-preserved siheyuan are distributed in Dongcheng and Xicheng Hutong districts. Representative visiting sites include Shijia Hutong Museum, Dongsi Hutong Museum and Lao She Former Residence. Visitors can admire grey brick walls, carved gate piers, screen walls and wooden lattice windows, and experience authentic local Beijing lifestyle, ancient folk customs and profound hutong culture.

- Choose official scenic courtyard museums for sightseeing; avoid informal private tour groups
- Subway is recommended; hutong lanes are narrow with nearly no parking spaces
- Wear comfortable walking shoes; hutong ground is uneven with thresholds and stone steps
- Keep voices low; do not disturb residents’ daily life
- Drones are prohibited over all hutong blocks
- Many courtyard museums close every Monday; confirm opening hours in advance
- Negotiate prices clearly before taking rickshaw hutong tours to avoid extra charges
