Sitting at an altitude of 4460 meters, it is a famous plateau freshwater lake fed by glacial meltwater and rainfall, perfectly paired with the towering Jomolhari Snow Mountain as a classic sacred lake and holy mountain combination in southern Xizang. Core highlights include mirror-like lake reflections of Jomolhari seven peaks, vast alpine wetland meadows grazing with yaks and Tibetan sheep, fluttering prayer flags and mani stone piles at roadside viewing platforms, flocks of black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese inhabiting in warm seasons, as well as frozen blue ice surface in winter. It is an essential highlight on the self-driving route from Gyantse to Yadong Port.

Travel Tips

Visitors can only get there by self-driving, chartered vehicle or group tour bus

Prepare a valid border pass in advance, since Yadong belongs to the border area and strict document checks are carried out on the way

The 4460-meter high altitude brings strong ultraviolet rays, piercing cold wind and obvious altitude sickness risks all year round

Carry portable oxygen cylinders, windproof thick jackets, gloves, lip balm and polarized sunglasses

Stick to the marked hardened viewing paths, never step into wetlands or walk too close to the water edge to avoid sinking and slipping dangers

Do not disturb wild birds, grazing livestock and plateau vegetation to protect the complete wetland ecological system

Drones are allowed to take off on flat highway parking bays, keep flight routes away from border control facilities and residential pastoral areas

Maintain a quiet atmosphere near mani stones and prayer flags out of respect for local Tibetan religious customs

Take away all generated garbage to keep the plateau lake and grassland intact
