About
Located about 60 kilometers northwest of Chengdu, Dujiangyan is the world’s oldest surviving no-dam irrigation system, constructed by Li Bing and his son during the Qin Dynasty. Divided into three core structures—Fish Mouth, Feisha Weir and Baopingkou, the project diverts Min River water to nourish the fertile Chengdu Plain. Surrounded by green rolling mountains, clear rushing rivers and ancient Taoist-style temples including Erwang Temple, it perfectly combines brilliant ancient hydraulic technology, profound historical culture and spectacular natural mountain water landscapes, sharing a joint World Heritage title with Mount Qingcheng.
Travel Tips
- Take high-speed rail from Chengdu Xipu Station to Dujiangyan Station in around 30 minutes, then transfer to scenic shuttle buses to the main gate.
- Adult ticket price is 80 RMB; prepare valid ID for ticket checking.
- Cable cars and sightseeing carts are available to cut down hiking fatigue for visitors with limited mobility.
- Wear anti-slip comfortable walking shoes, as stone paths get slippery after rainfall beside the river.
- Rent an audio guide or book an official interpreter to fully understand the irrigation project’s working principles and historical stories.
- Set aside at least 3 to 4 hours to visit all core engineering spots and Erwang Temple.
