About
Dukezong Ancient Town sits at the center of Shangri-La at an altitude of 3300 meters, a well-preserved Tibetan settlement with a layout shaped like an eight-petal lotus. Its Tibetan name means "Moonlight City", for white clay-plastered houses glow silvery under moonlight. Stone streets retain ancient horse caravan hoof prints, and Guishan Park inside holds the giant hand-spun prayer wheel. The whole town is free to enter; only the viewing platform atop the prayer wheel tower charges a separate small fee. It blends Tibetan folk life, handicraft shops, local restaurants and nightly Guozhuang bonfire dances.
Travel Tips
- Visitors aged 70 and above enter the prayer wheel viewing platform free by presenting official identity documents.
- Altitude reaches 3300 meters, walk slowly and avoid running to prevent altitude sickness. Carry portable oxygen if you feel dizzy or short of breath.
- Intense plateau ultraviolet rays all day, prepare high-power sunscreen, sunglasses and wide-brim hats. The temperature drops sharply after sunset; bring a thick windproof coat for evening walks.

- Stone alleys turn slippery after rain, wear non-slip flat shoes; high heels and slippers are not recommended for uneven stone roads.
- To spin the giant prayer wheel, gather at least 10 visitors to push it together; spin clockwise only following Tibetan religious customs.
- Respect local Tibetan traditions: speak softly near temples and mani piles, avoid stepping over threshold sills, and wear modest clothes for religious sites.
