About
Expanded in the 14th century, it once served as the ancient local administrative and military headquarters. It is famous as the Zongshan Anti-British Relic Site, the landmark that earns Gyantse the title of Hero City, where local people fought bravely against foreign invasion in 1904. Standing on the highest platform, visitors can overlook the whole Gyantse town and Pelkor Chode Monastery. It is paired with Baiju Temple and Palha Manor for a one-day Gyantse cultural tour.
Travel Tips
- Walk or take a short taxi ride from downtown Gyantse to the entrance
- Carry the border pass if heading for Everest and border counties later
- Climb the steep stone steps slowly to avoid altitude sickness and falls
- Apply strong sunscreen and wear sunglasses against intense plateau ultraviolet rays
- No flash photography inside historical exhibition rooms and relic areas
- Do not touch damaged ancient walls and cultural displays for protection
- Drones are banned over the fortress to safeguard the old building structure
