Founded in the Southern Song Dynasty, the village boasts a unique well-preserved ox-shaped water system layout, an outstanding masterpiece of ancient Huizhou urban planning. Leigang Hill serves as the ox head, winding water channels act as ox intestines, Moon Pond (Yuezhao) is the ox stomach and South Lake (Nanhu) forms the ox belly.
The classic Huizhou architecture features white walls, black tiles, horse-head gables and exquisite brick, stone and wood carvings. It was the filming location of the famous movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Core attractions include South Lake & Painting Bridge, South Lake Academy, Moon Pond, Chengzhi Hall known as “Folk Imperial Palace” and Wang’s Ancestral Hall. Artists gather here for sketching all year round. It combines ancient water conservancy wisdom, Huizhou architectural art, merchant culture and idyllic rural scenery, and is a top destination for cultural sightseeing, Hanfu photography and ink-wash landscape shooting.
