Huizhou Ancient City

Founded in the Qin Dynasty, it retains the complete layout of a Ming and Qing prefectural city and is the birthplace of Huizhou merchants, Huizhou opera and Huizhou studies. The most iconic landmark is Xuguo Stone Archway, the only surviving eight-legged stone memorial archway in China, hailed as “Oriental Arc de Triomphe”. Core attractions include Huizhou Prefecture Yamen, Nanqiao Tower, Doushan Street, Ancient City Wall, Huizhou Garden and Yuliang Dam known as “Dujiangyan on the Xin’an River”. Local residents still live inside the city, creating a genuine living ancient town with less over-commercialization. It features classic Huizhou architecture of white walls, black tiles and horse-head gables, abundant stone carvings and profound Confucian merchant culture. It serves as an ideal destination for cultural sightseeing, Hanfu photography and slow city walks to experience authentic Huizhou civilization.
