Built in 1442 and located beside Id Kah Square in the heart of Kashgar Ancient City, Id Kah Mosque covers 16,800 square meters and ranks as the biggest mosque in China. It consists of twin minarets, a grand arched gate, a huge courtyard with ancient trees and a spacious main prayer hall supported by carved wooden pillars, blending Uyghur local craft and Central Asian Islamic aesthetics. As the core spiritual center of Xinjiang’s Muslim communities, it hosts tens of thousands of worshippers during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, bearing thousands of years of Silk Road ethnic and religious culture.
Travel Tips
- Strict modest dress code: no sleeveless tops, shorts or short skirts; female visitors need headscarves to enter the prayer hall.
- Remove shoes before stepping into the main worship hall and keep voices low to respect religious rituals.
- Flash photography and close shooting of praying crowds are forbidden inside all hall areas.
