About
The core architectural layout follows the ancient Indian Vihara style with strong Tibetan and Han architectural fusion. The main hall houses the 12-year-old Sakyamuni Buddha statue, the holiest treasure of the temple. Circling the temple is the famous Barkhor Pilgrimage Circuit, where countless devout believers walk clockwise every day. It carries profound religious culture, ancient murals, Thangka paintings and precious Buddhist relics, and is the spiritual heart of Lhasa.
Travel Tips
- Take city buses No. 2, 3, 7, 20 to Jokhang Temple Station, then walk a short distance to the entrance
- Taxis can drop off directly at the peripheral square
- Real-name online reservation is required through the official WeChat mini-program
- No sleeveless clothes, shorts or revealing outfits allowed to enter the Buddha halls
- Wear comfortable flat shoes for long walking on stone streets
- No photography or video recording inside all Buddha halls to protect cultural relics
- Do not block the pilgrimage passage, do not touch religious artifacts, and follow the clockwise visiting rule
- Drones are strictly prohibited in the entire Barkhor protected area
