The reservoir water presents stunning gem green and sapphire blue tones under different light, forming a striking visual contrast with the surrounding rust-brown barren mountain ranges. A ruined ancient fortress stands on the central lake island, adding a touch of historical charm. It is a classic free roadside stop connecting Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Gyantse Ancient Town and Shigatse downtown, favored by landscape photographers for its quiet and uncrowded environment.
Travel Tips
- No fixed public transportation reaches the site
- Visitors can only arrive by self-driving, chartered car or group tour bus
- Prepare a valid border pass if continuing the journey towards Everest Base Camp, Gyirong or Nyalam ports
- The high-altitude area features strong ultraviolet radiation and persistent cold winds all year round
- Equip high-index sunscreen, windproof scarf, warm outerwear, gloves and polarized sunglasses
- The viewing platform is built on a mountain slope covered with loose gravel
- Walk slowly and stay away from unguarded cliff edges to avoid slipping and falling hazards
- Do not step on fragile lakeside wetland vegetation or approach the dam core restricted zone without permission for safety concerns
- Drones can be launched on the flat highway pull-off area, keep flight paths clear of mountain slopes
- Respect local Tibetan folk customs, keep voices low near roadside prayer flags and Mani stone piles
- Pack all personal garbage away to protect the intact plateau mountain and water ecological system
