It belongs to Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, consisting of a yak-hair tent campsite, viewing platform, prayer flag piles and landmark altitude sign.
Core highlights include the panoramic overlook of Everest snow-capped summit, golden sunrise and sunset glow on the mountain, zero light-pollution alpine starry sky and Milky Way, Rongbuk Monastery (the world’s highest temple) nearby, iconic 5200m altitude stone stele, and winding 108 hairpin bends along the mountain access road. It is a sacred destination for outdoor lovers, photographers and pilgrims, and is generally arranged as an overnight stop on the classic Xigaze-Everest two-day deep tour route.
Travel Tips
- No direct public transportation. Chartered car, private self-driving or group tour are the only options
- Private vehicles can only reach the Zhaxizong transfer station and must switch to official eco-friendly
- Apply for a border pass in advance at your household registration place, Lhasa or Shigatse
- The 5200m ultra-high altitude brings severe hypoxic environment and sharp temperature difference
- Fully prepare portable oxygen canisters, cold-proof down jackets, windproof hats, UV-resistant sunglasses
- Limit strenuous walking and running to avoid acute altitude sickness
- Flash photography is allowed for outdoor landscapes, but no drone flight without official approval
- Do not litter on the alpine grassland and glacier periphery to protect the fragile highland ecosystem
- Skip overpriced private tent upgraded accommodation and unnecessary guided services
