Located around 70 km from downtown Chengdu, Mount Qingcheng is one of China’s four great Taoist mountains and a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Split into Front Mountain and Back Mountain, the Front Mountain features centuries-old Taoist shrines including Tianshi Cave and Shangqing Palace hidden in lush evergreen woods, while the Back Mountain offers wild waterfalls, clear streams and quiet hiking trails. Shrouded in soft morning mist all year, it blends profound Taoist spiritual culture with soothing mountain ecology, earning it the title “the most serene mountain under heaven”.
Travel Tips
- Take high-speed rail from Chengdu Xipu Station to Qingchengshan Station in 30 minutes, then transfer to scenic shuttle buses to the mountain gate.
- Front Mountain ticket costs 80 RMB, ideal for culture sightseeing; Back Mountain ticket is 20 RMB for pure nature hiking.
- Wear non-slip walking shoes, as mountain paths get slippery after rain; bring light jackets for cool mountain temperatures.
- Cable cars are available on Front Mountain to save climbing energy; allocate 3–4 hours for Front Mountain and 5–7 hours for full Back Mountain hiking.
- Do not make loud noises in Taoist temples; follow quiet etiquette at sacred worship sites.
- Local vegetarian Taoist dishes and cured mountain meats are recommended at restaurants near the entrance and Tai’an Ancient Town.
