Stretching 1,033 meters from People’s Square to the Bund in Huangpu District, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street has a history dating back to the 1850s and earned its reputation as the most prosperous commercial street in old Shanghai. Fully turned into a car-free pedestrian zone in 1999, it features well-preserved European-style vintage department stores, time-honored local food shops, global brand flagships and dazzling neon light installations, perfectly combining old Shanghai’s nostalgic commercial culture with trendy modern shopping, dining and sightseeing experiences for travelers worldwide.
Travel Tips
- The whole pedestrian street is free to visit with no entry fee, open to visitors 24 hours a day
- Take Metro Line 1, 2 or 8 to People’s Square Station (west entrance) or Line 2, 10 to East Nanjing Road Station (east entrance)
- Don’t miss century-old stores like Shanghai No.1 Food Store for authentic Shanghai pastries and local souvenirs
- You can ride the vintage sightseeing trolley for a small fee to tour the whole street easily
- Walk east for only 10 minutes to reach the Bund after exploring the pedestrian street for a seamless sightseeing route
