Lijiang Ancient City, also named Dayan Ancient Town, is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site built along mountain streams with an 800-year history. Unique for its city without city walls, it crisscrosses with clear brooks, ancient stone bridges, Naxi wooden courtyard houses, Sifang Square and countless specialty shops. The town’s pedestrian streets are open 24 hours for free, while Mufu Mansion, folk performances and cruise boats charge separate fees. Tourists can wander lanes, taste Yunnan snacks, watch Dongba culture shows and admire red lantern night views.
Travel Tips
- Cobblestone roads are slippery after rain, wear non-slip soft shoes for long walking.
- Mass tourist groups arrive 10:00–16:00; visit early morning for quiet architecture photos.
- Do not carve or damage ancient wooden buildings, stone carvings and ancient trees.
- No motor vehicles inside the ancient town; park cars at peripheral parking lots and walk in on foot.
