Its Tibetan name translates to "Auspicious Lake", shaped like a sacred treasure vase in local folklore. Core highlights include the panoramic mirror reflection of Shishapangma Peak, the only 8000-meter mountain entirely within China, vast alpine wetlands that attract rare water birds such as black-necked cranes, primitive Tibetan villages along the lakeshore, wild prayer flag piles and Mani stone mounds, as well as the iconic roadside landmark sign. Far less crowded than famous highland lakes, it serves as a peaceful highlight on the classic South Ali self-driving loop and Everest west line itinerary.

Travel Tips

There is no scheduled public transport reaching the lake

Prepare a valid border pass in advance, as border checkpoints will conduct document inspections

The 4590-meter high altitude causes altitude reaction risks and extremely strong ultraviolet radiation all year

Carry portable oxygen tanks, thick windproof outerwear, gloves, lip balm, high-SPF sunscreen and polarized sunglasses

Lakeside ground consists of soft wetland mud, loose gravel and uneven slopes

Walk slowly on designated viewing paths to avoid slipping or sinking into marsh areas

Keep a safe distance from the lake edge and wetland vegetation

Do not trample alpine plants or disturb wild waterfowl and plateau wildlife

Drones can be flown on open flat roadside platforms, keep away from wetland protected zones and residential villages

Respect local Tibetan religious customs, speak softly near Mani stone piles and prayer flags, and do not remove or damage religious decorations

Pack all your waste and rubbish out of the scenic area to preserve the intact fragile plateau ecosystem
