Following the classic Song Dynasty layout of parallel land streets and water lanes, the 1.6-kilometer main road runs alongside Pingjiang River, dotted with 17 ancient stone arch bridges, white walls and black tile riverside dwellings and winding secluded alleys. It remains a living ancient neighborhood with permanent local residents, differing greatly from over-commercialized water towns.
Core highlights include Sipo Bridge, Hu Xiangshi Bridge arch landmark, Couple’s Garden, Pingtan opera teahouses and Kunqu performance venues. Red lantern reflections rippling on the river at night fully interpret the timeless poetic charm of authentic Jiangnan water town lifestyle, and it sits within the buffer zone of Suzhou classical gardens World Heritage Site.
