About
Formed by the Xin’an River Hydropower Project in 1959, it is a large artificial freshwater lake with Class I water quality, reputed as “The Most Beautiful Water Under Heaven”. At normal water level, more than 1,078 green islands scatter across the vast lake surface. Two ancient underwater cities, Lion City and He City, lie submerged beneath the water.
The scenic zone is divided into the Central Lake Area and Southeast Lake Area. Core islands include Meifeng Island, Yule Island, Moonlight Island, Longshan Island and Huangshan Tip. Taking sightseeing ferries to hop between islands is the classic way to explore. It combines magnificent lake-and-island landscapes, underwater historical relics, fishery culture and leisure resorts, and is a well-known destination for lake sightseeing, photography and summer getaways in the Yangtze River Delta.
