With a history of more than 600 years dating back to the Ming Dynasty, it served as the imperial route for emperors travelling to the Temple of Heaven. As the most renowned ancient commercial street in old Beijing, it gathers numerous time-honored brands. The iconic vintage ding-ding tram runs along the pedestrian avenue. Connected with Dazhalan, Xianyukou Food Street and Beijing Fang, the area combines traditional Chinese architecture, local snacks, century-old shops and lively urban vibes, presenting authentic Beijing folk culture and ideal city-walking and photography experiences.
Travel Tips
- The pedestrian street is open free of charge with no advance reservation required
- Subway Line 2 & Line 8 Qianmen Station is highly recommended
- Wear comfortable walking shoes; stone pavements extend over a large zone
- Beware of overpriced rickshaw tours in hutong areas; confirm prices clearly before boarding
- Street-side loose dried fruits and souvenir stalls should be chosen carefully; prefer official time-honored stores
- Drones are prohibited over the whole pedestrian zone
- Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower requires separate real-name reservation and is closed every Monday
- The street lights turn on around 17:30; evening visits deliver stunning night scenery
- Many popular restaurants have long queues during dining peak hours
