Characterized by towering vertical cliffs, jagged earth forest pillars and winding valley streams, it is a highly underrated niche photography destination on the classic Everest loop route.
Core highlights include deep cutting giant canyon landforms, layered weathered rock walls, distant snow mountain backdrop, fluttering colorful prayer flags and Mani stone piles dotted along the trails. The cliffside tea house provides a panoramic overlook of the entire gorge, and visitors can stack Mani piles for blessings. It is usually arranged as a half-day independent stop between Shigatse and Everest Base Camp.
Travel Tips
- There is no regular public transport leading to the scenic spot
- Travel by self-driving, chartered car or group tour bus is the only feasible way
- All visitors must apply for a valid border pass in advance covering Dingjie County, which will be checked at border checkpoints
- Private vehicles are not allowed to drive into the core canyon zone
- All tourists must transfer to official sightseeing shuttle buses at the visitor center
- The ultra-high altitude brings thin oxygen, strong ultraviolet rays and piercing cold winds all year round
- Prepare portable oxygen cylinders, thick windproof jackets, gloves, lip balm, high SPF sunscreen and UV-protective sunglasses
- Wear non-slip professional hiking shoes
- Strictly follow the marked wooden boardwalks
- Drones are restricted in border protection areas
- Keep quiet around Mani piles and religious markers out of respect for local Tibetan folk customs
- Carry all garbage out of the gorge to protect the fragile alpine geological and ecological environment
