It is a critical ecological barrier on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and a habitat for rare wild species including snow leopards, Tibetan antelopes and blue sheep. Core highlights include the 5200m Everest Base Camp viewing platform, the world’s highest Rongbuk Monastery, Gyala La Pass where five 8000-meter snow peaks come into view, winding 108 hairpin mountain bends, golden sunrise and sunset over Everest, crystal-clear high-altitude Milky Way free from light pollution, and ancient Rongbuk Glacier. Travel Tips

No regular public transport reaches the reserve

Visitors may only travel by chartered vehicle, self-driving car or packaged group tour

Private cars are restricted to Zhaxizong Transfer Station, where all guests must switch to official eco-friendly shuttle buses to access the core protected zone

All visitors must apply for a valid border pass in advance at their registered permanent residence

Elevations above 5000 meters bring thin oxygen, fierce winds and drastic temperature gaps

Prepare portable oxygen canisters, thick waterproof down jackets, windproof face covers, high-factor sunscreen

Refrain from fast walking, running and heavy physical labor to avoid acute altitude sickness

Outdoor natural landscapes allow flash photography, yet drone flights are strictly prohibited

Do not discard any waste on glaciers, alpine grasslands and mountain slopes to safeguard the fragile plateau environment
