The main lane stretches 787 metres, with 16 symmetrical hutongs spreading out on both sides, forming a distinctive fishbone-shaped courtyard layout. This area was once a residential district for nobles and literati. Today, it blends authentic ancient courtyard culture, time-honored local snacks, creative boutiques and casual cafés. Notable landmarks include the Former Residence of Mao Dun, Qi Baishi’s Former Residence and the gate of the Central Academy of Drama. It offers a perfect combination of old Beijing folk vibes and trendy urban culture, ideal for city walking, street photography and food exploration.
Travel Tips
- The public hutong streets are free of charge; real-name reservation via the official mini-program is required
- Metro Line 6 & Line 8 Nanluoguxiang Station is highly recommended
- Wear comfortable walking shoes; the bluestone pavement is uneven
- Do not take photos of local residents without permission; keep voices low to avoid disturbing residents
- Be cautious of unlicensed rickshaw tours; confirm prices clearly before boarding
- Drones are prohibited over the entire hutong zone
- Independent cultural venues such as former residences are closed every Monday (except public holidays)
- The main lane gets crowded on weekends; explore side hutongs for quieter scenery
