Founded in the 15th century, it is famous nationwide for its grand monk scripture debating activity, the most distinctive intangible cultural heritage of Xizang Buddhism.
The core highlights include the grand Tsokchen Main Hall housing a 6-meter Maitreya Buddha statue, the highly revered Hayagriva Temple, and the ancient shaded debating courtyard. After visiting the temple halls, visitors can climb the hillside behind the monastery for a panoramic overlook of the entire Lhasa city skyline. It is a classic stop to experience Xizang monastic study system and traditional religious rituals.
Travel Tips
- Take buses No.16, 22, 23, 24 to Sera Monastery Stop, or take a 20-minute taxi from downtown Lhasa
- No advance reservation required; tickets can be purchased on site directly
- Dress modestly with long sleeves and long trousers, no shorts or sleeveless outfits
- Follow the clockwise visiting rule inside halls, do not step over door sills or touch Buddha statues and murals
- Only mobile phones are allowed for shooting in the debating yard without flash, cameras are forbidden
- Slow down all movements to avoid altitude sickness at 3700m elevation
- Drones are banned in the whole protected zone
