About
Founded in 121 BC by General Huo Qubing of the Western Han Dynasty, Shandan Military Horse Ranch sits on the Damaying Grassland at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains in Shandan County, Zhangye, with a total area over 2,200 square kilometers. As a national 3A tourist attraction, it is the birthplace of the fine Shandan horse breed. The core visiting zone is No.1 Ranch, covering Luan Niao Lake, General Piaoji Camp and Kulong Gorge. In summer, boundless green meadows are dotted with golden rapeseed flowers against snow-capped mountain backdrops; every dawn and dusk, thousands of horses gather by the lake to drink, creating the spectacular "ten thousand horses galloping" scene, plus crystal-clear starry skies after dark for stargazing lovers.
