It ranks among the six major monasteries of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the permanent residence for successive Panchen Lamas, also designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit. The grand complex covers 185,000 square meters with layered palaces, scripture halls and stupa halls built along the mountain slope, standing as the core cultural and religious landmark of the entire Rear Tibet region. Core highlights feature the world’s largest gilded bronze Maitreya Buddha statue, solemn Panchen Lama mausoleum halls, towering Buddha exhibition platform for annual Buddha Unfolding Festival, ancient scripture printing houses, and panoramic overlook of Shigatse urban area from the hillside path. Public buses run to the nearby urban area; short taxi rides or walking are available
