The Oriental Metropolitan Museum (Six Dynasties Museum)

Designed by PEI Architects, it is China’s special‑themed museum fully dedicated to the Six Dynasties culture, built directly above authentic archaeological ruins of Jiankang Palace City, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties. Between the 3rd‑6th centuries, Six Dynasties including Eastern Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen established their capitals at Jiankang, making it one of the world’s earliest million‑population metropolises alongside Ancient Rome. Around 1200 unearthed relics are displayed across four exhibition zones. Core highlights contain the preserved rammed‑earth city‑wall relics on the basement floor, Glimpse of the Six Dynasties Hall, Elegance of the Six Dynasties Hall with bamboo‑shadow light‑and‑shadow installations, Outstanding Figures of the Six Dynasties Hall, plus national‑treasure artifacts such as celadon lotus‑flower zun and under‑glaze painted pot. Blending authentic archaeological heritage, minimalist Jiangnan‑style space design and soft controlled lighting, it creates immersive aesthetic scenes. It ranks as a must‑see destination for history study, relic appreciation and high‑end ancient‑style photography in downtown Nanjing.
