About
Its base imitates the structure of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, hence the name Tian Tan Buddha.
Visitors need to climb 268 stone steps to reach the Buddha’s platform for close worship and panoramic mountain and sea views. The base contains three exhibition halls enshrining Buddha’s sacred relics, Buddhist paintings and cultural displays. The scenic area also includes Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping Village and the Wisdom Path wooden scripture trail. The most classic way to get there is taking the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car from Tung Chung, which offers spectacular aerial views of mountains, the bay and Hong Kong International Airport. It is a famous religious pilgrimage site and natural leisure destination on Hong Kong’s outlying islands.
Travel Tips
- Take MTR Tung Chung Line to Tung Chung Station Exit B, then walk to Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car
- Terminal for a 25-minute uphill ride
- Budget-friendly alternative: take Bus No.23 from Tung Chung downtown, about 45–50 minutes
- Parking spaces at Tung Chung cable car station are limited, public transport is highly recommended
- Book cable car tickets online in advance to avoid long queues, especially on weekends and holidays
- Wear soft non-slip walking shoes for climbing the 268 steps; bring a thin jacket as the mountain top is windy and cooler
- Dress modestly when entering Po Lin Monastery, avoid sleeveless tops and short skirts
- Vegetarian set meals are available at the monastery canteen for a tranquil dining experience
- Secure mobile phones and valuables when climbing steep stone staircases
