Tunxi Old Street

Built beside the convergence of Hengjiang River, Shuai River and Xin’an River, it prospered during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a vital commercial hub for Huizhou merchants. The street adopts a fish-bone layout, consisting of one main street, three horizontal lanes and eighteen narrow alleys. Retaining authentic Song and Huizhou architectural style, the two or three-story buildings feature white walls, black tiles, horse-head gables and exquisite brick, stone and wood carvings, following the classic “shops downstairs, residences upstairs” pattern. Numerous time-honored brands gather here, including Tongderen Pharmacy, Hu Kaiwen Ink Workshop and Sanbai Inkstone Studio. Core attractions include the Eastern Archway, Wancuilou Museum, Tunxi Museum and Zhenhai Bridge (Old Bridge) at the western end. It concentrates Hui ink, She ink slabs, Huizhou folk snacks and intangible heritage handicrafts. It combines ancient dock commerce culture, Huizhou architectural aesthetics and lively urban marketplace vibes, and is a must-see destination for city walks, cultural sightseeing and night photography during Huangshan trips.
