With a history stretching back over 700 years, it is the most iconic pedestrian commercial street in downtown Beijing. The main pedestrian zone stretches approximately 800 metres, gathering numerous time-honored brands, comprehensive shopping malls, specialty snack stalls and cultural venues.
Must-see highlights include St. Joseph’s Church (East Church), Wangfujing Bookstore, Beijing Department Store and Peace Fruit Bureau, a retro immersive block recreating 1980s Beijing. The area blends centuries-old commercial heritage, traditional Beijing cuisine, trendy retail and classical architecture. It serves as a perfect stop for city walking, street photography, souvenir shopping and food tasting, and can be easily combined with visits to Tiananmen Square and the Palace Museum.
Travel Tips
- The pedestrian street is open to the public free of charge with no advance reservation required
- Metro Line 1 & Line 8 Wangfujing Station is highly recommended
- Wear comfortable walking shoes; large crowds gather in the evening, so keep personal belongings safe
- Beware of overpriced goods at street-side stalls
- Avoid unlicensed hutong rickshaw solicitors and illegal one-day tour promoters
- Drones are prohibited over the whole pedestrian zone
- St. Joseph’s Church exterior is free for photography; maintain quietness and do not step on lawns
- Peace Fruit Bureau inside Beijing Department Store requires separate admission tickets
- Street lights turn on around 17:30; late afternoon offers ideal lighting for architecture and night view photography
- Many popular restaurants have long queues during dining peak hours
