About
Designed by the renowned architect László Hudec and completed in 1924, it is a classic French Renaissance historic building in Shanghai’s former French Concession. Its iconic wedge-shaped ship-like outline at the five-way intersection forms a one-of-a-kind urban silhouette, matched with reddish-brown brick facades, elegant arched arcades and lush plane tree canopies. Still functioning as a private residential building nowadays, it cannot be accessed indoors, yet the street-level exterior has become the most popular citywalk and vintage photography landmark for capturing old Shanghai’s romantic literary vibe.
Travel Tips
- Take Metro Line 10 or Line 11 to Jiaotong University Station Exit 7, walk 5 minutes to arrive
- The best shooting spot is the diagonal crossroad; stay alert to passing vehicles for safety when taking photos
- Visit on weekday mornings or late afternoon to avoid crowded tourist groups and photography teams
- Indoor lobbies and residential floors are closed to the public, only outdoor perimeter viewing is allowed
- Extend the itinerary with nearby Soong Ching-ling Former Residence and Hengshan Road historic block
