With a water surface altitude of 4441 meters, its winding shoreline stretches like a turquoise coral embedded in the mountains, backed by the snow-capped Nyenchen Tanglha Range. The lake water shifts between multiple shades of blue with sunlight changes, known as "the turquoise earring of the goddess" in local legends.
The core viewing spots include Gangbala Pass Overlook (the classic panoramic viewpoint), Rurila Observation Deck and Togri Monastery, dubbed the loneliest temple on the lake. It is the most convenient sacred lake for a one-day trip departing from Lhasa.
Travel Tips
- Chartering a car, joining a small group tour or self-driving are the mainstream ways to get there
- Designated paid parking lots are set at the main scenic entrance, fully occupied in summer peak season
- Reserve tickets in advance via the official WeChat mini-program with real-name ID registration
- Wear non-slip sturdy sneakers and windproof down jacket or hardshell coat
- Prepare high-power sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, portable oxygen cylinders and glucose drinks to relieve altitude sickness
- Walk slowly and avoid running or jumping to prevent altitude reaction
- Respect local religious customs: do not step into the sacred lake, litter on the shore, damage mani stone piles and prayer flags
- Negotiate prices clearly in advance before taking photos with yaks
- Drones are banned in the entire ecological protection zone
- Carry a border permit if planning for in-depth lake circling routes
