Affiliated to the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the entire complex is embedded into limestone cliff faces with nearly 108 ancient meditation grottoes. Legendary figures including King Songtsen Gampo, Padmasambhava and Atisha all secluded themselves for spiritual practice in these caves.
Core highlights are Padmasambhava’s Moon Cave, Songtsen Gampo’s Retreat Cave, clusters of fluttering prayer flags and sweeping alpine valley panoramas. Far quieter than Lhasa’s downtown monasteries, it delivers a profound, primitive religious atmosphere and spectacular cliff landscape.
Travel Tips
- Self-driving or chartered vehicles are the most convenient transport, taking roughly 50 minutes from Lhasa
- Public shuttle buses depart from central Lhasa in early mornings for round trips
- Park at the paid lot at the valley entrance, then transfer to the mandatory eco-shuttle bus for the 3km winding mountain road uphill
- No online pre-reservation required; buy tickets on-site with your ID card
- Wear sturdy non-slip hiking shoes and windproof outerwear
- Move slowly, carry drinking water and oxygen supplies to prevent altitude sickness
- No photography inside all caves and Buddha halls
- Drones are strictly prohibited within the mountain protection zone
