About
Yuhu Village, also known as Xuesong Village, lies at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with an altitude of around 2700 meters. All local houses and lanes are built with primitive glacial stones, retaining intact traditional Naxi rural customs. The village is the former home of American explorer Joseph Rock, who lived and studied Dongba culture here for 27 years. Dragon Maiden Lake beside the village collects glacial meltwater, creating stunning snow mountain reflections on windless sunny days. The whole village is free to enter; separate fees apply to Rock’s Former Residence, village shuttle buses, horse riding and Dongba handicraft experiences.
Travel Tips
- Tourists aged 70 and above visit Rock’s Former Residence for free by presenting official identity documents.
- The altitude exceeds 2700m with strong ultraviolet rays and strong lake wind all day. Prepare sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hats and a windproof lightweight jacket. The temperature drops sharply at dusk, add warm layers for sunset viewing.
- Wear non-slip flat walking shoes. Stone alleys and lakeside meadows become slippery after rain, and many trails have uneven stone surfaces.
- Dragon Maiden Lake’s perfect snow mountain reflection only appears on calm mornings. Visit before 9 a.m. for fog-free mirror shots; windy afternoons create ripples and ruin lake reflections.
- Do not pick wild flowers, trample grasslands, carve stone houses or litter along the lake to protect the original village and wetland ecology.
- Combine Yuhu Village with Baisha Ancient Town in one day for a smooth low-traffic sightseeing itinerary, saving extra transportation time and costs.
