About
Established in the Western Han Dynasty, it paired with Yangguan as the two vital frontier passes controlling the northern Silk Road route, named for jade transported from the Western Regions through this checkpoint. Immortalized by the famous line Beyond Yumen Pass no warm spring breeze can reach, the scenic area is a heritage cluster covering three sites: the Small Square City (the main Yumen Pass ruin rammed with loess), the ruins of the Han Dynasty Great Wall, and Hecang City (ancient military granary). It is a fixed stop on Dunhuang’s classic west line one-day tour together with Yangguan and Yardang Geopark.
Travel Tips
- Self-driving, chartered car or joining a west line group tour is the most practical choice, with a 2-hour drive from urban
- Reserve tickets via the official WeChat mini-program under real-name rule and enter with ID card
- The three relic sites scatter widely across the Gobi, so the 50-yuan round-trip sightseeing shuttle bus is mandatory for access
- Wear full sun protection, windproof outerwear and sturdy walking shoes, and carry sufficient drinking water against dry, scorching desert climate
- Do not climb, carve or damage the earthen heritage ruins
- Collect the official border-crossing certificate stamp for immersive ancient frontier experience
- Drones are banned in the entire heritage protection zone
