Surrounded by water on four sides, the town features a well-organized well-shaped river network, classic white-washed and black-tiled riverside dwellings and ancient stone arch bridges. Its symbolic landmark is Twin Bridges, made world-famous by painter Chen Yifei’s oil painting Memory of Hometown.
Core highlights include Zhang Hall (Ming Dynasty official mansion), grand Shen Hall built by wealthy merchant Shen Wansan, Fu’an Bridge, ancient opera stage and Sanmao Teahouse. Wooden sculling boats drifting along canals and red lantern reflections on water at night fully interpret the poetic and gentle charm of authentic Jiangnan water towns.
